
While Iranians have protested and tried to overthrow the Islamic regime many times over the past thirty years, this time is different. There is an entire generation which has had to endure the repressions of the ISI for their whole lives and which recently has access to social media and channels from outside their country. They know there is another way to live in the world and they are willing to fight for it. Millions are no longer willing to comply or obey the regime-no matter what the personal cost.
“The Shah had his secret police, but you knew who they were. You could recognize them. Whereas Khomeini said, we are going to create a secret police of thirty million, which was more or less the whole population. He created these Islamist surveillance presences everywhere, in every place of work and every place of study within the whole society. This is how they’ve been able to keep the power for more than forty years”.
The current regime has cut power, internet access, put up roadblocks, released the police and military with weapons and orders to kill-often indiscriminately-civilians in the street, in public buildings and in their homes. They are accusing protestors of being “terrorists” and “waging war against Allah” by burning buildings (including politically and militarily run mosques) and calling out the leader Ayatollah Khomeini and his followers.
